In 2005 trekt het schilderij op een veiling de aandacht van twee kunsthandelaren. Achter de slordige restauratie menen ze de hand van Leonardo da Vinci te zien. Ze kopen het voor ruim duizend dollar en in 2012 wordt het in Londen als een echte Da Vinci gepresenteerd. Kunstcritici zijn sceptisch maar de belangen zijn groot.

In 2017 worden alle records verbroken en betaalt de koper 450 miljoen dollar. Wie de nieuwe eigenaar is blijft onduidelijk, maar waarschijnlijk is het de omstreden kroonprins van Saoedi-Arabië. Na de verkoop is het schilderij niet meer gezien.

 De film zal worden ingeleid door Filip Vermeylen, hoogleraar Global Art Markets aan de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam. Hij zal ingaan op de kunstmarkt, die een vreemde markt is geworden: schilderijen worden niet zelden gebruikt als onderpand voor criminele transacties of puur als investering, opgeslagen in beveiligde warenhuizen. Zo raakt de kunst losgezongen van haar werkelijke waarde en funktie.

Director Andreas Koefoed positions this story squarely at the intersection of capitalism and myth-making, posing the question: is this multi-million dollar painting actually by Leonardo, or do certain powerful players simply want it to be? The Lost Leonardo detangles how a painting became a pawn in a geopolitical game played by the world’s wealthiest and most powerful people, ultimately revealing how vested interests became all-important, and the truth secondary.

Screening with an introduction by Filip Vermeylen, professor Global Art Markets at the Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam. The introduction will be about the art market, which has become a strange market: painting are not seldom used as collateral for criminal money of as an investment, locked away in storage wharehouses. Art becomes detached from its real value.
